ABOUT THE BOOK
This fourth volume of the Estructuras de Acero (Steel structures) series, edited by Professor Ramón Argüelles Álvarez, is of fundamental practical interest because nowadays a large proportion of structural calculations are carried out with computer programs. Entering or checking the correct data for the buckling lengths of members is extremely important to avoid errors that can sometimes lead to truly unfortunate results, with the risk this entails for the construction. Knowledge of the critical buckling factor is also necessary in order to select the appropriate design method.
The text comprises 9 chapters and an appendix covering the fundamentals of design and the standards in force: Basic Document SE-A (CTE), EAE Instruction and Eurocode 3. The first two chapters and chapter 5 deal with the fundamentals of flexural buckling and the application of the standards to determine the global critical buckling factor, modal displacements and buckling lengths. Chapters 3, 4 and 6 cover the practical calculation with the METALBUCKLING and METALPLA XEn programs. Chapter 7 studies torsional and torsional-flexural buckling, chapter 8 lateral torsional buckling and chapter 9, courtesy of the authors listed on the first page of this book, presents the fundamentals and formulations of global buckling analysis including torsion and warping of cross-sections. The CONSTEEL program is used for its application.
To make the calculations easier, the very easy-to-use METALBUCKLING program has been developed and is supplied with this book.
This publication is intended for professionals, architects and engineers, but as its authors are university lecturers, it is also structured as a textbook. Examples have been included throughout in order to apply or clarify particular concepts. We are sure that this approach will be of great help to teachers seeking to update their knowledge in order to pass it on to their students, and also to professionals who use steel structure design programs.

ABOUT THE BOOK
This revised, expanded (100 more pages) and updated 3rd edition is adapted to the 2011 EAE Instruction and to the latest revision of the DB SE-A of the CTE, pending approval. It also includes the provisions of Eurocode 3, brought up to date. Written by university lecturers, it is structured as a textbook and intended for professionals, architects and engineers.
Numerous examples (68 in total) have been included in each chapter to clarify concepts, and a total of 15 broader exercises dealing with everyday practical issues have been added at the end of the chapters.
This volume 1 of Estructuras de Acero is complemented by volume 2, Uniones y Sistemas Estructurales (Connections and structural systems), and by a forthcoming volume 3, Vigas Mixtas de Edificación (Composite beams for buildings).
