New steel structures book: Instability
Provisional content: to be reviewed and completed with the text from the current website.
ABOUT THE BOOK
This fourth volume of the Estructuras de Acero (Steel Structures) collection, directed by Professor Ramón Argüelles Álvarez, is of fundamental practical interest because a large proportion of structural calculations are now carried out using computer programs. Entering or checking the correct data regarding the buckling lengths of members is extremely important to avoid errors that can sometimes lead to truly unfortunate results, with the risk this entails for the construction. Knowledge of the critical buckling load factor is also necessary in order to select the appropriate calculation method.
The text includes 9 chapters and an appendix covering the fundamentals of the calculation and the standards in force: Basic Document SE-A (CTE), EAE Instruction and Eurocode 3. The first two chapters and chapter 5 deal with the fundamentals of flexural buckling and the application of the standards to determine the global critical buckling load factor, modal displacements and buckling lengths. Chapters 3, 4 and 6 cover the practical calculation using the METALBUCKLING and METALPLA XEn programs. Chapter 7 studies torsional and flexural-torsional buckling, chapter 8 lateral-torsional buckling and chapter 9, courtesy of the authors listed on the first page of this book, presents the fundamentals and formulations of global buckling analysis including torsion and warping of sections. The CONSTEEL program is used for its application.
To make the calculations easier, the very easy-to-use METALBUCKLING program has been developed and is supplied with this book.
This publication is intended for practitioners, architects and engineers, but, as its authors are university lecturers, it is also structured as a textbook. Examples have been included to apply or clarify certain concepts. We are sure that this approach will be of great help to teachers seeking to update their knowledge in order to pass it on to their students, and also to professionals who use steel structure design software. The book is in Spanish.
